Worlds collide via new Wunderman Thompson Perth campaign for West Australian Ballet
For the first time, West Australian Ballet and West Australian Symphony Orchestra performed on stage together in Goldberg Variations. To celebrate this, Wunderman Thompson created a print and radio campaign to imagine how it may look and sound when these two creative powerhouses merge.
To this end, working with print, Wunderman Thompson created ballerinas dancing alongside Bach’s masterpiece. The music notes from the Goldberg Variations sheet music set the stage for dancers to strike their poses. While on radio, Nick Gallagher from Cue Sound recorded ballerina Amanda Leigh and violinist Christina Katsimbardis as if ‘mid-practice’, to recreate the performance.
The Wunderman Thompson creative team, Meg Watson and Jordan Ellis said: “Both organisations have so many unique sounds and symbols we can play around with. It lets us create something new, but still instantly recognisable.”
This work continues the long and creative partnership between Wunderman Thompson Perth and West Australian Ballet.
Wunderman Thompson Account Director, Lana Abro said: “We are very lucky to have an amazing client, who gives us the space to develop creative work. Coupled with the creativity that Meg and Jordan brought to the table, the work developed for Goldberg Variations was exceptional.”
West Australian Ballet Public Relations and Digital Manager, Scott Dennis, added: “The creativity and high-quality executions of the team at Wunderman Thompson are always impressive. These press and radio executions saw music leap from the page and through radio, as West Australian Ballet premiered a new ballet to one of Bach’s iconic compositions. As a client, we treasure the beautiful execution and thought that makes a movement-based art such as dance, stand out on a page and on radio.”

Nice work
Suuuuuuuper nice
Love it!
I was wondering how you’d make radio for such a visual idea – nailed it. And props to smart clients for approving a radio spot that Cautious Colin or Arse-Covering Aaron (new Helix Personas?) would have killed.
Wooooo!!! Love it! Amazing work Meg & Jordan 😀
What I like most about the Wunderman Thompson relationship with WA Ballet is the way that the agency and client have strategically, deliberately and proactively worked together to create multiple opportunities to create award winning and publicity generating work. This has happened over an extended period of time and through different iterations of management, marketing management, creative and account management teams.
Great lesson here for anyone who wants to build out a portfolio, grow their career and generate some brand fame for themselves and their clients that it takes hard work, effort and time but it can happen if you work it.
More people, agencies and clients should be thinking like this.
Good point. But surely easier to blame the client, brief, budget, timeline, weather?
Elegant.
