Who designed the WAY 79 logo?

Calling on Perth advertising veterans to cast their minds back to the late 1970s to help acknowledge the designers of the distinctive WAY 79 logo.

To & Fro Studio is working on a regional Collie Mural Trail project for the WA Department of Premier and Cabinet. As well as acknowledging a number of new murals in Collie and surrounds, the next iteration of the trail map and website will also acknowledge the town’s existing mural artwork. There is a mural in town that depicts that WAY 79 logo (see above left), and To & Fro Studio would like to include it on the trail and acknowledge the designer of the logo.

WAY 79, also referred to as WAY ’79 and WAY 1979, marked the sesquicentennial (or 150 years) since the European colonisation of Western Australia. All manners of merchandise was also produced at the time (above right).

The first WAY 79 event was a New Year’s Eve concert on the Perth Esplanade. Ken Colbung, a Nyoongar leader, had been invited to perform, using the occasion to hand an eviction notice to the Governor of Western Australia, Sir Wallace Kyle.
