West Australian Ballet brings the power of feeling to every moment with new 2020 season campaign via Meerkats
Last Tuesday night, West Australian Ballet’s 2020 season launched in the beautiful WA State Theatre for the first time. It kicked off with an improvised live performance by the Company’s dancers, as the theatre’s booming sound system set the audience’s pulses racing.
The 2020 season is built on a platform of transcendence – bringing the spirit and energy of live performance back. Unlike the disembodied spectres of television, film, and streaming platforms, ballet is built on the sense of awe that comes from seeing human bodies being pushed to their limits. To dramatise this, Meerkats used the transformative powers of emotion and feelings; from the deathly fear and suspense of their blockbuster performance of ‘Dracula’ to the timeless childlike wonder of ‘The Nutcracker’.
Each show was given its own key ‘feeling’ and was stylised to form a spectrum of the human experience, all held together under the tagline ‘Feel something you’ve never felt before’.
“With almost 40 world-class dancers, we need to perform more than ever before to share the incredible emotional exchange that features in our artform,” said Aurélien Scannella, West Australian Ballet artistic director. “Dancers are made to be onstage, so in 2020 we’ll perform over 90 shows including a new season called STATE, and a five-city tour to China which is in the final planning stages.”
Now, more than ever, the West Australian Ballet will feel ‘live and alive’, in the minds of arts lovers and ballet aficionados all across the state.
