The West Australian’s Daryna Zadvirna awarded WA Journalist of the Year

On Saturday evening several Seven West Media journalists were awarded and recognised for their dedication to journalism at the 2022 State Media Awards.

The West Australian’s Daryna Zadvirna was awarded the top honour, WA Journalist of the Year, for her eye opening documentary My Ukraine: Inside the Warzone. Zadvirna returned to her war-torn homeland of Ukraine in February to document Russia’s war crimes and capture the remarkably resilient spirit of the Ukrainian people. Zadvirna also won the Video Feature category for the documentary, Feature Photograph and also Multimedia Feature for Foul Play: The Tiny Pinder Story.

Following a year of scoops, agenda-setting stories and ground breaking documentaries, Seven West Media reporters and photographers once again dominated, making up 11 of 28 categories in this year’s winners list.

West Australian Newspapers editor-in-chief Anthony De Ceglie said he was extremely proud of all the Seven West Media winners and finalists.

“It’s great to see so many winners spread out across our entire team – from breaking news to feature writing to opinion writing and two separate documentary projects,” De Ceglie said.

These annual awards are the pinnacle in WA Media awards, celebrating quality journalism and rewarding media professionals whose commitment and excellent media coverage best informs and entertains West Australians across print, broadcast and digital media platforms.

De Ceglie added: “Our multi-media mix of award-winning work is why The West continues to be the fastest growing cross-platform news brand in the country.”
