Anthologie puts the spotlight on overfishing via a Global Fishing Index digital platform for Minderoo Foundation

Anthologie has launched a world-first fisheries data analysis platform in partnership with Minderoo Foundation, to promote a global response to the decline of the world’s fish stocks.

The platform presents an interactive map of fishing and governance research, spanning 1,465 fish stocks and 142 coastal countries and territories. Each country features an in-depth assessment of their fishing practices, alongside an interactive visual breakdown of how their performance has been graded.

“Designing a platform to highlight and communicate a depth of information was a genuine challenge, from planning through to development. We worked closely with the Minderoo research team to present their findings in a way that was both informative and engaging,” said Anthologie’s Digital Director, Niaal Holder.

Over the past 50 years, the world has witnessed a massive decline in the health of its marine fisheries, with fish being removed from the ocean at a far greater rate than they can naturally replenish. The Minderoo Foundation is calling on governments and businesses to declare their intent and demonstrate action to reverse fisheries decline.

“Our Global Fishing Index is a wake-up call to governments and businesses around the world,” says Dr Andrew Forrest, chairman of the Minderoo Foundation. “It is time to take accountability for the health of your fisheries, the size of your fishing fleets and the level of access provided to foreign fleets to fish your waters.”

The Index reveals 1 in 10 fish stocks have been driven to collapse and that the majority of countries are not delivering against global sustainability commitments, including Australia.

“The Global Fishing Index brings much needed attention to the issue of overfishing and need for better management to ensure there are fish for future generations,” says Kendra Travaille, Research Manager, Sustainable Fisheries at Minderoo Foundation. “We couldn’t have achieved this vision without the Anthologie team who helped bring the website to life. Leaders and change makers now can explore fisheries performance and challenges at a country level, providing a much needed platform to compare progress and share solutions.”
