ACA launches next Create Space Action Webinar: The massive impact of microaggressions

Advertising Council Australia is inviting all industry professionals to register for the third Create Space Action Webinar on microaggressions, taking place at 12:15pm AEST (10:15am WA time), Tuesday 4 April.

Hosted by ACA national head of engagement, Hannah Sturrock, and featuring a panel of industry leaders and experts, the session will look at microaggressions and their impact on inclusion in the workplace, discussing some of the most common examples and how to address them.

ACA’s Create Space Action Webinars are designed to provide practical guidance on how to implement the steps in the Create Space Report and Action Plan, aimed at driving progress on inclusion and diversity.

Panellists for the microaggressions webinar include Michael McConville, global CEO of Cummins & Partners, Sheryl Marjoram, CEO of DDB Group Sydney and Felicity Menzies, CEO and principal consultant at Include-Empower.

Create Space Census data found that the Australian advertising industry registers relatively high levels of negative behaviour at work, one of the main drivers of the industry’s overall inclusion score. A subset of behaviours called microaggressions is particularly widespread, experienced by almost half the sample.

Some examples of common microaggressions include being interrupted or ignored, looking at your phone while a colleague is talking, mispronouncing someone’s name because “it’s too difficult to say”, ignoring preferred gender pronouns or using gendered language, telling neurodiverse people to be ‘less sensitive’ or ‘more sociable’, or assuming an older person isn’t able to use or learn to use technology.

Microaggressions may appear quite harmless, or be described as “small slights” but research indicates they have a powerful impact on the psychological wellbeing of marginalised groups. The census also found reporting levels were very low, a sign the industry does not yet appreciate the impact of microaggressions on engagement, performance and retention.

Phase two of the Create Space action plan is due for release in April, and the census will be re-run at the end of 2023.
