The West Australian is supporting the next generation of journalists with The Debrief

The West Australian has partnered with Edith Cowan University (ECU) to give the next generation of journalists a high-profile platform to showcase their work in The Debrief – The West’s monthly business focused editorial series.
Each month, articles from three ECU students will be published in The Debrief across print and online. The initiative is designed to provide real newsroom experience, supported by professional guidance from our senior journalists. Across 10 editions, the students will contribute content covering advertising, media and marketing.
“This partnership reflects our commitment to developing local journalism talent,” said Sarah-Jane Tasker, Editor of The West Australian and The Nightly.
“By giving students access to WA’s largest media platform and editorial guidance, we’re not only helping them build their careers but also bringing fresh voices and perspectives to our business coverage.”
The program is a unique opportunity for participating students to add to their portfolios, benefit from professional mentoring and gain an insider’s view of newsroom operations. The Debrief presents partnership opportunities through sponsorship, content integration and thought-leadership initiatives. With The West Australian reaching an average of 432,000 readers each Saturday, The Debrief will achieve strong exposure while supporting emerging media talent.
Steinar Ellingsen, coordinator of the bachelor of journalism and broadcast media at ECU, said the new collaboration gives students the chance to “jump the queue” in terms of employment.
The first edition was published on Saturday 27 September featuring work from three ECU students – Xander Vinciguerra, Ariana Koskela-Reyes and Charlotte Goodwin with the focus on the impact of AI in Advertising.
