The Experts talk to Media Nursery’s Andrea Burns

The Experts Podcast hosted by Nic Hayes and Carmen Braidwood went to the nursery of media in Western Australia and one of the most successful media programs in the country.

Andrea Burns is the course Coordinator of the Graduate Diploma of Broadcasting at Edith Cowan University, herself an award-winning journalist, a speaker, a trainer and media commentator. Andrea spoke candidly about the future of media, the type of students looking to get involved in the industry and discussed some of the rich history and foundations of the course that is so well regarded by media houses across Australia.

In the podcast you will hear Burns describe this as the job that brings her such great joy. The ECU post graduate course teaches students to be broadcasters, newsreaders, journalists, announcers and anything that takes their fancy in the media sector. The success rate of this course is driven by the practical elements that the course offers. Burns speaks so highly of those that have come before her, but it is her and sports broadcaster Adam Papalia who are curating the future media professionals of tomorrow.

Hayes and Braidwood are focused on drawing out what are the individual characteristics of those looking to work in media today.

Burns said: “It isn’t just for the youth as there are a lot of mature students looking to change their career path.”

Life experience is valuable for a broadcaster and is a real asset as you can reach a greater toolkit of options when it comes to working in the media.

Burns in the podcast discusses some of the attributes a student will want to bring to the table.

“The key to being a good journalist is to be curious. The two characteristics of a future broadcaster is to demonstrate enthusiasm and potential when applying for the course.”

Right now, the applications are open for the course, and it is a destination course because of its success rate and the practical experience that you get. When listening to Burns talk to the Experts Podcast you can hear the passion and the drive that she has inside her belly to continue the success of this remarkable program. The podcast even got an exclusive with the University in coming years moving into the CBD campus there will be potentially a new offer to students with a Master of Journalism and Broadcasting.

Very exciting news ahead for the future of media in Western Australia and the country.
