Start named global Webby Awards finalist for RTRFM website – Voting closes April 17

Start has been named a finalist in the 29th Annual Webby Awards for their work with RTRFM, in the Websites & Mobile Sites – Music category. The project has been recognised as one of five globally shortlisted music websites, selected from more than 13,000 entries.

The nomination places Start and RTRFM in the company of industry leaders Apple and Splice, alongside cultural icons Lady Gaga and Billie Eilish X Soundcloud. Winners will be announced next month at the official Webby Awards ceremony in New York City.

“Being recognised at this level, and in that kind of company, is testament to our team’s talent and creativity,” said Neil Mason, Managing Director at Start. “This project represents everything we love about what we do – creative freedom, cultural significance and digital work that stands far apart from the crowd. And, of course, it’s lovely to get some global recognition for RTR and Perth in the web space.”

The website, which launched mid last year, brings RTRFM’s eclectic spirit into a bold, modern digital space. It features a reimagined brand identity, simplified user experience, and seamless access to live broadcasts, podcasts and RTRFM’s vast mix archive. The project also included the launch of RTR2, an experimental sister platform.

“It’s been a pleasure to collaborate with Start on this project, from the conception to this nomination. Start has given us a world-class website that never forgets its roots in the WA community that RTRFM represents, from the musical artists to our volunteer presenters,” said Simon Miraudo, General Manager at RTRFM. “To see this kind of recognition just a few days after the station’s 48th birthday is a testament to the spirit of continual evolution here at the Sound Alternative.”

“We knew how much the station meant to people, so every decision we made – from the design to the user journey – was about honouring that legacy and setting them up for the future,” said Crissy Foster, General Manager at Start.

Alongside its Webby Award nomination, the project was awarded Gold for Website Design at the Amsterdam-based Indigo Design Awards, and is also a finalist in the Community & Culture category at the upcoming Australian Web Awards.

As a Webby finalist, the RTRFM website is in the running for two honours: the Webby Award, selected by the International Academy of Digital Arts and Sciences, and the Webby People’s Voice Award, decided by public vote.
