Sports Editor Jakeb Waddell wins most Outstanding Headlines at the Kennedy Awards
The West Australian’s Sports Editor, Jakeb Waddell, has been recognised for his back page wit, awarded most Outstanding Headlines in the prestigious Kennedy Awards.
The Kennedy Awards is a nationally recognised media awards, hosted by The Kennedy Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to excellence in Australian journalism.
Waddell was shortlisted for three AFL-related eye-grabbers, including headlines “AH, KANE HAS DONE IT AGAIN, NO CHANCE IN VFL, TAKES ONE TO NO.1”.
Waddell said he was honoured by the award but said it was “reflective” of the hard work and dedication shown by the entire Sports team.
He added: “I am absolutely honoured to have been recognised at such a prestigious event and perhaps even more honoured that I managed to win for headlines that did not mention the words “Harley” or “Reid”.
“While I am grateful for the individual accolade, I believe it is reflective of the incredible work of my Sports team at The West, as you can’t have a great headline without a ripping story to attach it to.”
Waddell began his career as the North West Editor covering the Kimberley and Pilbara before overseeing eight mastheads spanning from Rockingham to Manjimup as the South West Editor, earning a move into the Sports Editor position, at The West Australian and The Sunday Times.
