Perth industry enjoys a special evening with legendary strategist Jon Steel

It was a full house as 110 people packed out Palace’s biggest cinema in Perth on November 17 for Ready! Fire! Aim! Whatever happened to Strategy?, a special evening with legendary strategist Jon Steel.

UPDATE: A video of the presentation is now available to watch HERE.

Presented by the Account Planning Group WA and Advertising Council Australia, the audience, comprising agency CEO’s, planners, creatives, clients, researchers and media agency execs, were enthralled by Jon’s vision about what he believes to be the biggest issues and challenges facing advertising at the moment.

Steel’s hugely compelling presentation was followed by an interesting Q&A session, facilitated by host, Smiljka Dimitrijevic (below right), Strategy Director at 303MullenLowe and APG’s WA representative.

Over four decades and across three continents, Steel has helped create famous and highly effective campaigns for some of the world’s most influential brands. During his talk, Steel referenced campaigns he’d worked on, clients he’d worked with, his successes and failures and his experience heading up the former WPP Fellowship mentorship program.

“It was an honour to be invited to speak to the group in Perth, said Steel. “I have had little contact with the industry since retiring, and it was great to see so many people, so engaged. I hope it will provide a solid foundation for future events, and help to build a thriving strategic community in Perth.”

Dimitrijevic said: “It was phenomenal to see people from a range of industries – advertising, marketing, media, research, education – come together to hear about the ways in which agency planners can boost business outcomes and, in equal measure, increase effectiveness of individual teams, be it creative, marketing, media, and so on.

“To echo Jon’s words – “it’s great that it wasn’t just the two of us talking to an empty room. The event sold out in a week, and again in five days when we increased capacity. I think it’s testament not only to the value Jon brings to our community, but also to the hunger people have for learning from and being inspired by top minds.”

“APG WA made a promise that this event would give every individual at least one nugget to take back with them and apply in their work going forward and I would like to think that we delivered on that. Looking forward to doing it again next year,” she said.

As a ‘thank you’ gift for giving up his time so generously, APGWA and ACA adopted a two-year-old baby elephant named Kindani for Steel from the Sheldrick Wildlife Organisation, a charity he has visited in Kenya that is very close to his heart.
