Paul Coghlan and Matt Nankivell launch new creative agency, Moonsail
Acclaimed creative leaders Paul Coghlan and Matt Nankivell have teamed up to launch a new creative agency offering, based in Perth, specialising in brand advertising, design and strategy.
Throughout their awarded careers, both Coghlan and, returning Perth expat, Nankivell have led the creation of compelling brands and platforms for both local and global clients.
Coghlan began his career at Clemenger BBDO in Melbourne, then grew his leadership experience at agencies such as Saatchi & Saatchi NZ, Wunderman Thompson, 303MullenLowe and Meerkats, then most recently as Chief Creative Officer of Marketforce.
After stints at Rare and Meerkats, Nankivell moved to the UK in 2016 and worked at McCann London and M&C Saatchi London. Most recently he worked at Ogilvy London where he held the position of Global Head of Art on the Dove account.
Only a few months’ young, Moonsail already has a significant and enviable base of clients, including Watches of Switzerland Australia, Rocky Ridge Brewery, Ace Brands, Artisan Brewery, Bombak Gin, Steadyrack, Aromatherapy Lab, Margaret River Roasting Company, WeRide, and more.
“Our point of difference from day one has been about mixing our local experience and proven track record with our international experience to help globally-minded brands grow through compelling work – locally, nationally and internationally,” says Nankivell.
“Globally minded doesn’t necessarily mean global domination – although some brands we are helping are on track! It means the product or service is world class – sets the bar in their category or industry – and therefore deserves to succeed. We are also focussed on brands entering the Australian market, and brands looking to scale globally.”
Coghlan sees huge potential in tapping WA’s rightly justified new confidence, across all sectors.
“WA has some truly world-class products, services and businesses. We are enjoying helping client partners across many sectors – from amazing beers, WA-born innovations, to world-renowned luxury products.”
Coghlan believes geography is no barrier to creating success for clients.
“It actually doesn’t matter where you are in the world, just that you create incredible work that moves the needles for businesses and helps them grow. We currently have strong ties with certain pockets of the world such as the UK and US and are building out some solid partnerships”.
Moonsail’s rapid rise has already resulted in key hires in areas of design, social media management and project management, with three new ‘Moonsailors’ to be announced shortly.
“Growth and demand are such that we have already switched into hire mode which is truly exciting, for us and our clients,” says Nankivell.

All the best boys! Love the name too!
I love this. I love that more and more great creatives are doing this. And I hope this trend doesn’t slow down anytime soon. Creativity should be the most important commodity in an agency and I would say a few places have forgotten that. Creative leaders have been pretty disposable in some networks too. Bring it on Paul and Matt, show us how it’s done.
Huge news! Dream team back together. Well done, look forward to watching the success.
Congrats guys, enjoy the journey!
Paul was transformative at WT and MF. Looking forward to seeing what he can do unconstrained by legacy structures and thinking.
Matt, Ian Fairnie and I would love to catch up to see how our combined skills, may be able to assist you on your return to Perth. Congratulations on your career to this point.
Well done lads. All the best.
