Mural Media has teamed up with Pilbara Ports to deliver a new outdoor mural campaign in Karratha, aimed at promoting recreational boating safety during the Pilbara’s busy dry season.

The mural forms a key visual element of Pilbara Ports 2025 Recreational Vessel Safety Campaign – now in its eleventh year. Located prominently in central Karratha, the mural targets the region’s growing community of recreational boaters, encouraging safe navigation practices around Dampier Port and other busy commercial waterways.

The mural was developed to bring one of the campaign’s core messages to life: the dangers of blind spots and the importance of avoiding exclusion zones around large commercial vessels. Through bold, illustrative storytelling and sharp visual composition, the artwork serves as a compelling public reminder that “You’re the skipper and you’re responsible.”

Mural Media Director Andrew Fordham, said: “The project demonstrates the power of place-based creative to deliver urgent, community-focused messaging.

“This was a fantastic project to be involved in. Safety campaigns don’t need to be confined to brochures and banners – this mural shows how outdoor art can cut through with purpose and connect meaningfully with the local community.”

With increased recreational boating during the Pilbara’s dry season, the campaign is designed to reach both local skippers and visiting boaters with essential safety reminders: stay out of restricted areas, avoid anchoring near navigation aids, and always give large vessels a wide berth.
