Mikey Hamer, Director & DoP: Championing inclusion with Bus Stop Films

Mikey Hamer’s journey with Bus Stop Films is deeply rooted in his commitment to giving back. After his father’s passing in 2016, Hamer sought ways to make a positive impact within the film industry. Encouraged by a mentor from the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS), he attended his first Bus Stop Films class at AFTRS as a volunteer.

In 2021, Hamer was hospitalised with an acquired brain injury. The year-long recovery revealed the lack of support and accommodations for people with disabilities within the film industry. Requests for quiet spaces or set communication boundaries were often met with resistance. This experience fuelled Hamer’s drive to advocate for inclusivity, particularly within creative environments.

After his recovery, Hamer moved to Fremantle, WA, with his partner Tanya, where he embraced a new pace of life that aided his healing. He is now a big part of the local Clockwork Films family which he describes as “an incredible group of creatives from all over the world”. It was here that he began collaborating on the Bus Stop Films Employment program. This initiative has successfully placed over 1,000 people with disabilities in screen industry jobs with companies like Disney Marvel, Fremantle, Endemol Shine and ABC TV.

Hamer’s current role includes participation in the Inclusion in Action Heads of Department program. Talking about the initiative, Hamer said: “It’s all about giving production companies and industry professionals the tools to be more inclusive and confident when it comes to working with people with disabilities. The workshops are practical, down-to-earth, and create a safe space to learn and ask questions.” He encourages others to connect with Bus Stop Films to learn how they can foster inclusivity in their productions.

Join Hamer and Sam Riesel (Bus Stop Employment member) for a free online micro workshop Monday 7th April.
