Debra Neve departs Initiative to join Mitchell & Partners in group business director role
Debra Neve, one of the most respected members of the Perth advertising community, has resigned her position as managing director of Initiative to take up the role of group business director at Mitchell & Partners.
Neve’s departure ends a 17-year stint at Initiative – 16 as MD – which saw the agency grow to become a major player in the media planning and buying industry with billings estimated at around $55 million.
Says Neve: “The decision to move was not taken lightly. The professional team of people at Initiative Perth are not only a delight to work with but are also my friends. Having said that, the opportunity to work with the largest media entity in Perth and the potential challenges presented by their range of clients is one I look forward to. I’ve worked with both Alan Matthews and Tom Martin in the past as well as many of their senior people, so I’m confident I will enjoy my future with them.”
Originally from Canada where she worked on clients such as Colgate Palmolive, Nestle, Playtex, Kellogg, Salada, McDonald’s Restaurants and the Canadian Government Office of Tourism, Neve arrived in Perth for a ‘short visit’ in 1980 – and has been here ever since.
In 1985, she started Perth’s first independent media buying consultancy, Media Specialists. On the basis of her strong background and much lauded strategic and buying skills she quickly built the business and acquired clients including Swan Brewery, Department of Health, Chicken Treat, Big Rooster, Woolworths, Vax Appliances and Tony Barlow – all national accounts.
Neve was one of four media leaders to implement the first media training course in Perth. Over the years, she has been involved with the AFA and their media school and lectured at Curtin University, Edith Cowan and UWA for their Advertising and Marketing courses.
In January 1994, Neve brought her business to Initiative and joined the company as general manager. She was appointed managing director in 1995. Accounts handled over the years include Bunnings Warehouse, Police and Nurses Credit Society, Stockland, TVW Channel 7, BGC Group, BankWest, Cash Converters, Kresta Blinds, RAC, Beds Plus and the West Australian. In fact due to her long tenure in the marketplace there are few Perth clients Neve hasn’t worked with.
Neve’s move to Mitchells signals a changing of the guard in Perth media. Says Mitchell’s managing director Alan Matthews: “Mitchell & Partners are now clearly the largest media planning and buying specialists in the state and our clients deserve to work with the very best in the business. Over many years Debra has probably been the best of the best and will be an enormous asset moving forward.”
Matthews also made it very clear that Neve had been engaged to work on some of Mitchells’ largest accounts and the move was not intended as a raid on Initiative’s client list.

Big news!
Good for Mitchell’s. Bad for Initiative.
did someone say sinking ship?
Wow. Congratulations Debra and Mitchells! Sounds like an unstoppable union to me.
well it’s about time mitchells did something! let’s hope Debra can sort that place out!
Any betting on when the raid will commence
Anonymous 2:33pm – Debra will be an asset wherever she goes, Mitchells are doing something otherwise they wouldn’t have attracted such talent!
Anonymous 2:33pm – Ill informed and unamed .. typical!
Congrats Debra. You are an amazing women and your weath of knowledge is an asset to Mitchells. Congrats on the move and I have loved working with you over the last 8 yrs!
11:48am – 2.33pm is spot on but wouldn’t say this will be a fix it’s just another buyout. You don’t work for Debra do you?! lol
Perth Media: clearly Mitchells needed to do something after losing a couple of clients and in danger of losing more at both national and local level. I’m not hiring such a senior person is the answer, but I guess we’ll see what happens. Perhaps they should be looking further down the chain.
I agree that Debra will be an asset, and she wont tolerate the second rate work. Oh and money talks buddy….
And no, I dont work for Debra!!
11:14 – what are you on about???? you clearly do not know what your talking about ..again… and you dont know the WA media landscape!
Mitchells have gained more than they have lost .. umm does Lotterywest and Tourism WA trigger your memory as a start!? ..
To get Debra in the first place is a coup for Mitchells! .. I agree time will tell then you can show whom you really are!
Mitchells are looking further down the chain they picked up all the disgruntled employees from other agency’s in WA!
I dont work with Debra but all I have heard has been positive!
Money does talk – clearly you dont have much cents I mean sense! lol
A good business decision
As far as office dynamics go – watch the fur fly
Perth Media….clearly the loses have not made campaign brief so you are ill informed. so what for tourism and lotteries, mitchells are the only ones that will bend over for them!
In any case, I have more sense than to argue with some ill informed “Perth Media” person – i have better things to do, like spend the big dollar i earn.
A wonderful person and the best media guru in town. I wish you well Debra
Debra,
I was extremely disappointed to hear you were leaving. I don’t know nor ever heard of the people now supposedly running the joint.
‘Forgive them for they know not what they do’..Why though, would you go to Mitchells? You are the very best the market has to offer and the only one capable of doing and running their own show.
My very best wishes. Hope everything pans out OK.
Dennis Merchant.
