Convergence brings two WA artists together in a celebration of creativity and individuality
Two Western Australian artists with distinct creative styles will come together for the first time for Convergence, a joint exhibition celebrating women, individuality and artistic expression at AKA.ARTWEAR Studio in Perth from 22 October to 5 November.
Contemporary painter Cher van Schouwen and artist and fashion designer/Campaign Brief’s very own Kaye Guthrie Adonis will bring their independent collections together, combining original paintings, mixed-media artwork and hand-painted wearable art in an exhibition that explores the unexpected connections between two different creative worlds.
van Schouwen will exhibit approximately 10–12 original paintings, featuring her signature use of expressive colour, texture and mixed media. A butterfly appears somewhere in every painting, representing themes of transformation, femininity, vulnerability and change. Her collection also pushes creative boundaries, with two works painted directly onto glass doors rather than traditional canvas.
Guthrie Adonis will showcase approximately 15–20 original artworks alongside selected pieces from her AKA.ARTWEAR Spring/Summer 2027 collection titled “No Ordinary Wife”, creating a bold dialogue between contemporary art and fashion.
Rooted in a distinctive street-couture aesthetic, Guthrie Adonis’ one-of-a-kind, handmade and hand painted practice transforms the canvas into wearable art. Collage, ink, aerosol, paint, embroidery and fabric converge in richly layered compositions, evolving from canvas to silk and from artwork to garment.
A standout exhibition piece will be Happy Wednesday, the only collaborative artwork created by the two artists. Combining van Schouwen and Guthrie Adonis’ distinct styles, the painting brings together expressive figures, loose gestures, graffiti-inspired marks and spontaneous colour. The work explores joy, individuality and the idea that people can interpret the same artwork in entirely different ways.

While their approaches differ, both artists share an interest in individuality, self-expression and celebrating the female spirit.
“We created two very different collections, yet without planning it, they have come together in such a powerful, playful celebration of the female spirit,” said van Schouwen.
For Guthrie Adonis, the exhibition is a tribute to the women who shaped her life and an opportunity to encourage others to embrace what makes them different.
“I hope this exhibition leaves a positive message – that being different is something to celebrate, and that our individuality can be our greatest form of expression,” added Guthrie Adonis.
The collaboration began when Guthrie Adonis invited van Schouwen to exhibit at her Murray Street studio. Rather than creating work to complement one another, each artist developed her collection independently before bringing the pieces together for Convergence.
The exhibition will also feature two intimate Chat with the Artists sessions, offering visitors the opportunity to hear directly from the artists about their work, ask questions and explore the ideas behind the exhibition.
