CB Hot Suit Takes: Georgia Sharman, Senior Account Manager, Block
CB Hot Suit Takes is our new Q&A series for senior leaders and senior suits across the WA industry ~ covering careers, creativity, challenges and the song that sums it all up. Next up in the hot seat is Georgia Sharman, Senior Account Manager, Block.
1. What made you get into advertising?
I grew up loving craft, design and art, and always knew I wanted to be part of the creative world, I just didn’t really know where I fit within it. While studying at Uni, I decided to go full creative, majoring in fashion with minors in photography and graphic design. Through that, I realised I didn’t necessarily want to *be* the creative in a professional sense, but I still wanted to be involved in the work that made it all happen.
I’ve always had a creative side to my brain and a natural ability (and love) for organisation and structure, so I found myself drawn to the behind-the-scenes side of the professional world. That naturally led me into collaborative roles where I work closely with creatives to help bring ideas to life.
2. Which piece of work are you most proud of, and why?
I absolutely loved working on the Denada Indulge More. Sugar Less campaign. I was able to bring some of my production background into this work, as well as FINALLY having a reason to put the fake ice cream recipes that were inundating my algorithm for months to the test (which ended up being shot in the campaign). It was so fulfilling to have some of my personal hobbies (food and craft) collide with my professional skills. It was the type of photoshoot which if I’d told teenage Georgia she’d be a part of, she would freak outttt. So much fun.
3. What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role right now?
The rise of AI makes me feel quite uneasy, and it’s feels like a constant battle of head vs heart. My head knows it’s the way forward (for now) and I don’t want to be left behind by avoiding it completely, but my heart worries about the impact it’s having on the world, both environmentally and morally. It’s a love-hate relationship.
4. Was there a moment, a course, an experience, a mentor or advice that really kick-started your career?
I lived in the UK for seven years, based in Bristol, and the experience of moving abroad and seeing more of the world really changed the game for me. Bristol is such a beautifully creative city, and while I was there I met so many great people and had some incredible opportunities (opportunities that I don’t think I would’ve had if I’d stayed in Perth).
I started my career within the creative industries as a Runner in TV production, which eventually led to a role as a Production Coordinator. It really cemented for me that I loved working with creatives to help bring their ideas to life logistically (within reason… and budget…). That experience gave me so many transferable skills, which ultimately helped lead me to my current role at Block.
5. What’s the most recent thing you’ve learned – professionally or personally?
I now know how to make REAL ice cream after getting a stand mixer attachment for my birthday (shout out Jay). Next flavour on the list: crunchy nut cornflake ice cream.
