Perth kicks off 2025 #MeetTheMedia tour with top journalists and media insights

On Thursday, the annual #MeetTheMedia event was held at the Australian Institute of Management WA – and it didn’t disappoint.
Now in its tenth year of touring the country and bringing together some of the nation’s best media professionals, Perth was the launching pad for the 2025 #MeetTheMedia series.
Featuring Matt Zis from PerthNow, Ben Harvey from The West Australian, and Sean Cowan from Business News, the session was both informative and entertaining.
The second panel of the TV bosses, the Chiefs of Staff of Seven, Nine and Ten in the form of Gemma Varone, David Cooper and Neil Smith delivered the intelligence and requirements for what makes a great TV news story. While they are all remarkably similar in their requirements each network had a slightly unique style to a demographic, audience, and yarn.

The third panel brought us home discussing breakfast radio and online media with ABC’s Mark Gibson, 6PR Karl Langdon and WA Today Emma Young. The two breakfast hosts were no different to their on-air personas, both engaging, informing, and entertaining. Young, who is also celebrating ten years at WA Today, offered invaluable advice on pitching and presenting stories.
Before breaking for morning tea Media Stable’s Emily Morgan interviewed an attendee Kelly Crossley of Transitainer WA and member of Media Stable about her experiences in the media. The real and personal experience gave an insight in the process and workings of an expert commentator. Incredibly Crossley’s first media appearance was on Seven’s national breakfast program Sunrise.
After morning tea, the workshops started where the journalists were assigned tables, and the attendees moved around to what many were describing as ‘speed dating’ with the media.
“Hosting #MeetTheMedia is the best thing I get to do,” said Nic Hayes of Media Stable. “I am so looking forward to delivering it to the rest of the country, but Perth will always be our home for this event.”
