40 Years ago today – August 8, 1980 – Perth radio was changed forever when 96FM began broadcasting.
It was Perth’s first commercial FM station and changed the way people thought about radio with cool announcers, contemporary playlist, innovative programming and spectacular promotions.
Relive (or hear for the first time) the moment it all started at 4.00pm today, when that first broadcast will be replayed.
Thanks to The Sharper Pencil’s John Ilian, who was responsible for 96FM’s ground-breaking advertising over its first couple of decades, for the graphic above.

Happy Birthday! I remember that my dad took us all down to Adelaide Terrace to see the lazerlight show at the back of the station. Troubled by drizzle and technical issues, the event was eventually successful. And dad went out and bought an FM receiver, however, he stumped up the extra moolah for a Stereo AM model just in case FM was a fizzle.
John Ilian was/is a trailblazer. His work on those early 96fm advertising campaigns was world class – way ahead of its time!
A splendid time was had by all!
