Campaign Brief asks two creative thinkers from the Perth industry to highlight recent great work that caught their eye from both our local WA industry and internationally. Creative Circle contributors this week are Stef Langton (above left) and Lachy Banton (right).

WA: Seeing a diverse audience cast in any Aussie ad is worth a commendation alone. However, the WA Electoral Commission campaign is more than just good casting. Solid insight, nicely executed. Gets my vote. Boom tish.

Non-WA: I’m a sucker for good typography and kinetic type done well is always a winner. This call-for-entries spot for the Advertising and Design Club of Canada 2021 award show is a great example. Set to a tightly edited soundtrack, it serves both its primary purpose and as a neat reminder of the shitshow that was 2020 (especially in North America). It’s a shame the rest of the campaign didn’t live up to this little gem. C’est la vie.

WA: My local pick was one that stuck with me from early December – 303 MullenLowe’s photographic exhibition for Telethon Kids Institute. I can almost see the insight on the brief: kids just want to be kids. Idea: show kids being kids… with a healthy dose of nostalgia. I chose this pearler for heaps of reasons but mainly because it’s a beautiful thought that’s been beautifully executed (anyone else see hints of Stranger Things in it?) and it reminds me of my own childhood. Man, how good were Haro BMX bikes?

Non-WA: COVID-19 has robbed us of a lot of things. But something it hasn’t robbed us of is creativity. If anything, it has set a fire within our bellies. And a perfect example of this is Fare Well – an innovative and inspiring three-part video series by Underbelly to celebrate Scotland’s Hogmanay in a safe, socially-distanced way. Yeah, I know Singapore did something similar but what made Scotland’s standout to me was the writing (courtesy of poet Jackie Kay) that paired with the incredible drone show over the brooding Scottish landscape. Put this one on the shelf next to “The man who walked around the world” and “Dear Brother”.
